What Is an Orthosis?
An orthosis is a brace or support worn on the body. Your practitioner will explain the purpose of your prescribed device and how it fits into your care plan.
Braces differ in their design, materials, and fit. The appropriate option depends on your prescription, individual needs, and the activities you want to discuss with your practitioner.
Your Orthotic Evaluation
At your appointment, we’ll review your prescription, discuss your concerns, and evaluate the area where your brace will be worn. If you already use a brace, bring it so we can assess its fit and condition.
Depending on the device, fitting may involve measurements, a cast, or other methods of capturing your shape. We’ll explain whether your brace will require additional appointments for fabrication or fitting.
Fitting & Using Your Brace
During your fitting, we’ll check how the brace fits and make appropriate adjustments. You’ll receive instructions for putting it on, removing it, and caring for it.
Your practitioner will explain your individual wearing instructions and what to watch for as you begin using the device. Please ask questions if any part of the instructions is unclear.
Adjustments & Follow-Up Care
Contact our office if your brace becomes uncomfortable, no longer fits as expected, or shows signs of damage. We can arrange an appointment to assess the device and discuss the next steps.

Preparing for Your Appointment
Bring your insurance information, any prescription you have received, and your current brace, if applicable. For a leg or ankle brace appointment, bring the shoes you typically wear with it.
